Background of the Study

Investigative journalism serves as a cornerstone of democratic societies by exposing corruption, holding power to account, and fostering transparency. This form of journalism goes beyond surface-level reporting to uncover hidden facts, ensuring that public resources are managed responsibly. In Jalingo Local Government Area (LGA) of Taraba State, where corruption has impeded development, investigative journalism plays a pivotal role in promoting accountability. According to recent studies, the practice of investigative reporting contributes significantly to uncovering cases of financial mismanagement, nepotism, and abuse of office (Egwu & Ibrahim, 2023). Scholars assert that robust investigative journalism leads to policy reforms and enhances public trust in governance (Adebayo & Suleiman, 2024). However, the practice is fraught with challenges, including threats to journalists' safety, inadequate funding, and political interference. In regions like Jalingo LGA, these challenges are exacerbated by limited access to information and a lack of institutional support. Despite these obstacles, investigative journalism remains an indispensable tool for curbing corruption, ensuring justice, and fostering socio-economic development. This study seeks to explore how investigative journalism can effectively address corruption in Jalingo LGA and propose actionable recommendations to strengthen the practice.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Corruption remains a significant impediment to development in Jalingo LGA, manifesting in the misallocation of resources, poor governance, and weakened public trust. Journalists often operate in hostile environments where political interference, threats, and inadequate resources limit their ability to investigate and report corruption effectively. Moreover, the absence of comprehensive legal protections for journalists further exacerbates these challenges. Despite these constraints, there is limited research on the effectiveness of investigative journalism in tackling corruption within Jalingo LGA. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining the role of investigative journalism in exposing corrupt practices and evaluating the barriers that hinder its success in the region.
